Synopsis:
This poignant film about human nature  is set during the Holocaust and the years that follow in war-torn France. The father, Maxime Grimbert, tries to wash away his Jewish ancestry by changing his name and baptizing his son. The son, a scrawny, sickly child, imagines a stronger older brother who would be more appreciated by his athletic parents.  At fifteen, the son discovers a toy in the attic, and hidden secrets are revealed.   The film shifts from the present, portrayed in black and white, to the panic-stricken days of the past, portrayed in color—a cinematic inversion of the norm.
