Leaving the comforts of academia, he took his theology to the streets, fighting for religious liberty for Soviet Jews, marching for civil rights with Martin Luther King, Jr., opposing the Vietnam War, and pioneering interfaith dialogue. Rabbi Heschel's teaching of reverence for the dignity of all human beings, and his warning against the dangers of religious fundamentalism are beacons of relevance in our world today.
